Aging is a significant stage of life marked by physical, psychological, and social changes. Individuals' attitudes toward aging play a crucial role in their quality of life, particularly in reducing feelings of loneliness. Psychological factors such as resilience and self-esteem serve as effective mediators in mitigating the negative effects of aging on loneliness/social outcomes. This study aims to examine the relationship between attitudes toward aging and loneliness, with the mediating roles of resilience and self-esteem in older adults (60 and over) in Iran. The research utilized a descriptive-correlational design and applied structural equation modeling. The target population consisted of older adults residing in Kermanshah Province in 2024. A sample of 320 participants was selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected in person using standardized questionnaires, including the Attitude Toward Aging Scale by Laidlaw et al., the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the UCLA Loneliness Scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS26 and AMOS24 software. Findings revealed that a more positive attitude toward aging was associated with lower loneliness. This effect was observed both directly and indirectly through the mediating effects of resilience and self-esteem. Resilience, as a psychological factor, mediated the relationship between attitudes toward aging and loneliness, while self-esteem also played a significant mediating role in this relationship. Although longitudinal evidence is needed to investigate the causal pathway, study results suggest it may be important to enhance psychological factors, such as resilience and self-esteem, along with fostering positive attitudes toward aging, as key strategies to reduce social isolation among older adults. These results offer valuable insights for developing supportive policies and comprehensive programs to promote the mental and social well-being in older adults.
