Background: Older adulthood is one of the important stages of human life, during which individuals experience substantial physiological and psychological changes. Among the psychological resources that contribute to well-being during this period, character strengths are of particular importance. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of mindfulness training on the six core character virtues among older adults attending day care centers for older adults in Rasht, Iran.
Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of all older adults in Rasht, Iran, in the Iranian year 1404, from among whom older adults attending the Rangin Kaman Day Care Center for Older Adults were selected as the available sample. The sample consisted of 30 participants (23 women and 7 men), who were selected through convenience sampling and, after meeting the inclusion criteria, were randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group (15 participants in each group). Participants in the experimental group received mindfulness training based on Kabat-Zinn’s approach in eight weekly 90-minute sessions. . The research instruments included the Peterson and Seligman Character Strengths Questionnaire Scale. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) in SPSS version 26.
Results: After controlling for pretest scores, mindfulness training significantly increased the dimensions of temperance and transcendence. However, no significant effects were observed on wisdom, courage, humanity, or justice.
Discussion and Conclusion: The findings indicate that mindfulness training significantly improves the character virtues of temperance and transcendence in older adults. Therefore, mindfulness training may be considered an effective, short-term, and low-cost intervention for strengthening selected character strengths among older adults attending day care centers.
