High blood pressure and cognitive impairments are common disorders in older adults. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-destructive healthy living patterns, sensation-seeking levels, and perceived stress with cognitive performance in older adults with hypertension. This descriptive correlational research was conducted with older adults diagnosed with high blood pressure in Urmia city in 2023. By visiting the healthcare centers in Urmia, 215 older patients with high blood pressure were selected using the convenience sampling method. Data were collected using the Montreal cognitive assessment, self-dissolving health questionnaire, Zuckerman’s sensation-seeking scale, and perceived stress questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test and multiple regression with SPSS 17 software. The results showed a significant relationship between cognitive performance in older adults with hypertension based on self-destructive healthy living patterns, sensation-seeking levels, and perceived stress. Predictor variables explained 33% of the cognitive performance score (p < 0.001). Executive functioning accounted for 15%, excitement for 11%, self-socialization for 3%, self-coping for 2%, and perceived stress for 2% of the variations in cognitive performance (p < 0.001). Therefore, in older adults with high blood pressure, self-destructive healthy living patterns were weak, and sensation-seeking and perceived stress levels were high. To help these individuals, emotional control and stress management skills should be taught.
