Abstract

With the increasing population of the elderly and the importance of quality of life at this stage of life, identifying psychological factors influencing life satisfaction in this age group is essential. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between wisdom and life satisfaction in the elderly, with the mediating roles of meaning in life and moral foundations. This descriptive correlational study was conducted using structural equation modeling. The statistical population of the study included older adults in Tehran in 2024, and using the convenience sampling method, 210 older adult people, including 125 men and 85 women, were selected as samples. Data were collected using the Life Satisfaction Scale (SWLS), Thomas et al. Short Form Wisdom Scale, Moral Foundations Questionnaire(MFQ30), Meaning in Life Questionnaire(MLQ). Data analysis was conducted using SEM in SPSS 26 and AMOS 24.The results showed that wisdom and its components have a direct and significant effect on life satisfaction, and the meaning in life and moral foundations play a mediating role in the relationship between wisdom and life satisfaction. Thus, wisdom leads to increased life satisfaction in older adults by expanding the meaning of life and strengthening moral foundations. The findings emphasize the importance of paying attention to psychological and moral dimensions, especially the dimensions of wisdom, in improving the quality of life of older adults. Therefore, these results have led to increased awareness of older adults and attention to their needs in understanding the meaning of life, wisdom, and ethics, and have deepened our understanding of life satisfaction in old age.
