Abstract

this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of compassion-based therapy on distress tolerance, sense of coherence, and adaptive strategies for emotion regulation in older women in Tehran. The research method was a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of the study was all older women in Tehran in the second half of 1404. The sample size of the study included 30 older people (65 to 75 years old) who were selected using purposive sampling and based on the study entry criteria and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. The experimental group received compassion-based therapy in 12 weekly 90-minute sessions. The scales used in this study included Antonowski's sense of coherence, Garnevsky's adaptive emotion regulation strategies, and Simon and Gaher's distress tolerance. The data were analyzed by univariate analysis of covariance using SPSS version 22. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the variables of distress tolerance, sense of coherence, and adaptive emotion regulation strategies (p<0.001). Since compassion-based therapy was effective on distress tolerance, sense of coherence, and adaptive emotion regulation strategies, it can be concluded that this intervention can be used by counseling centers and psychological services to improve distress tolerance, sense of coherence, and adaptive emotion regulation strategies in older women
