Abstract

Population aging will be one of the most critical social and demographic phenomena of the 21st century. The concept of an age friendly city focuses on creating urban environments in which older adults can enjoy a desirable quality of life. Accordingly, this study aims to explore elderly women’s perspectives on the psychosocial indicators of an age friendly environment in one of the cities of Isfahan Province, Iran. To achieve this objective, a narrative analysis approach was employed, and in depth narrative interviews were conducted with 21 women aged 65 and above. The findings indicate that elderly women complain about the lack of welfare and recreational facilities, insufficient social security, a generational gap with today’s youth, and economic difficulties. Due to the lack of training for social participation and the perception that society no longer needs them, many experience social isolation. During this stage of life, they also face mental health challenges such as stress, hopelessness about life, and low self esteem, and they express a need for counseling services. The findings of this study can help identify the needs and problems of older adults and contribute to creating a more appropriate and standard environment for the elderly.
