Abstract

Aging is one of the sensitive stages of human development that has its own characteristics and conditions, among which death anxiety and sense of coherence are among the most common mental health issues of the Person elderly. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of narrative therapy on death anxiety and sense of coherence of Person elderly women. The research method was quasi-experimental and the research design was pre-test-post-test with a control group and a follow-up period. The statistical population of the study included women in the elderly day care centers of Gorgan city (with an average age of 70 to 80 years) in 2024, from which a sample of 30 people was selected through convenience sampling based on the study's inclusion and exclusion criteria and randomly assigned to the intervention group (15 people) and control group (15 people). Antonovsky's sense of coherence and Templar's death anxiety questionnaires were used to collect data. The intervention group underwent 8 sessions of narrative therapy (each session lasting 90 minutes), while the control group did not receive any training during this period. The data were analyzed using univariate analysis of covariance and SPSS26 software. The results showed that narrative therapy was significantly effective in reducing death anxiety and increasing the sense of coherence in Person elderly women (p˂0.001). This effect was also sustained at follow-up. Therefore, narrative therapy can be used as an effective method to increase the sense of coherence and reduce death anxiety in elderly women.
