The effectiveness of structured reminiscing on the anxiety and aggression of the elderly

Abstract

Anxiety and aggression are the common issue of aging. This period is full of a variety of feelings and disabilities. Trying to solve these behaviors means enhancing their quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of structural reminiscence on the anxiety and aggression of the elderly living in the nursing homes in Mashhad. In this semi-experimental study, 30 elderly people in Mashhad Healthy Elderly Home were selected by available method. In 2 groups of 15 people randomly, and 8 sessions of structural reminiscence session, each session 60 to 90 minutes. The control group remained without any intervention during the research period. The elderly's cognitive status was measured before and after the intervention by the Aggressive Aggression Questionnaire of the Eisenk and Golin Wilson and the Bai Back’s Anxiety Questionnaire. The test of the two groups’ comparisons and correlation was performed with the help of SPSS26.0 software. The findings of the research showed that structured reminiscing has been effective in reducing the level of anxiety and also improving and reducing aggression in the elderly. Therefore, it can be concluded that reminiscing has a positive effect on improving the psychological condition of the elderly. Therefore, it is recommended that social workers, counselors, psychologists, and health care workers active in the field of aging use this method in their treatment programs and interventions.
