The lived experience of the elderly in the nursing home: a study with a phenomenological method

Abstract

One of the sensitive periods of life is old age, which is associated with a wide range of physiological and psychological changes. In recent years, the care of the elderly has undergone changes, and a number of elderly people live in nursing homes, which have unique challenges and characteristics, so the purpose of this research was to analyze the experience of the elderly in nursing homes. The present research method was qualitative and one of the phenomenological methods. The statistical population of the present study included all the elderly living in nursing homes in Tehran, and using the targeted method, 11 people were selected as the sample group until reaching the saturation stage. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed with the 7-step method of Claesi. The findings of the research in the three areas of identifying the challenges and problems of the elderly in nursing homes (3 main themes and 13 sub-themes), identifying effective factors and solutions to improve the quality of life of the elderly (3 main themes and 10 sub-themes) and hope and prospects for the future of 1 theme main and 2 secondary themes) were categorized. According to the obtained results, it can be concluded that the elderly living in nursing homes have special conditions and characteristics, which are necessary to take necessary measures to increase the quality of life of the elderly in nursing homes according to the suggestions of the present research.
