Abstract

The growing trend of the aging phenomenon propounds the need to pay attention to the issues of the elderly as a social necessity. Lack of social support and body dissatisfaction can cause problems for the elderly. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on Social support perception and body dissatisfaction in the elderly in Tehran in 1397. The present study was a semi-experimental design with pretest-posttest design with a control and experimental group. The statistical population included all the elderly referred to the Nasim elderly cultural center of Tehran who selected via purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two groups of experimental (20 people) and control (20 people). The experimental group received 8 90-minute interventional sessions and the control group remained on the list. The instrument used in the research was the Perceptual Social Support Zamet et al. Questionnaire and Littleton's Body Dissatisfaction Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using a single variable covariance via SPSS19 software. The results showed that ACT has improved perceived social support and its components including family support, support for friends and support of important people in the elderly. Also, the results showed that the ACT has improved dissatisfaction with the body and its components including hiding perceived defects and interference concern with social functioning in the elderly. The results of the present study showed the effectiveness of ACT on the elderly. So, it is suggested that psychologists and therapists use this method to improve the psychological problems in the elderly.
