Due to the over increasing trend of elderly population, improving their psychological characters such as wisdom seems to be necessary. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between religious adherence, authentic personality, post-traumatic growth and flexibility with wisdom in the elderly through the mediation of self-coherence. The study method was the pathway analysis. The statistical population included Ahvaz’s aged people in 2017 among whom 300 were selected using convenience sampling. Participants were asked to fill out religious adherence (Janbozorgi), authentic personality (Wood et al.), post-traumatic growth (Tedeschi & Calhoun), flexibility (Dennis & VanderWal), wisdom (Schmit et al.) and self-coherence (Flensborg-Madsen et al.) questionnaires. Analyzed through Pearson correlation coefficient and pathway analysis were data using SPSS 21 and Lisrel 8.8. Results indicated that authentic personality and post-traumatic growth have a significant direct positive effect on elderly’s self-coherence which, in turn, has a significant direct positive effect on the elderly’s wisdom. Moreover, authentic personality and post-traumatic growth have a significant positive indirect effect on wisdom through the mediation of self-coherence. A suitable mediation between authentic personality and post-traumatic growth with wisdom in the elderly was self-coherence (P<0.01). The findings represented the direct and indirect effect of authentic personality and post-traumatic growth on wisdom in the elderly through the mediation of self-coherence. Consequently, authorities, counselors and therapists are thought to be able to improve wisdom in elderly through augmenting the amount of authentic personality, post-traumatic growth and self-coherence.

The share of the elderly population has increased significantly in recent years. Elderly population is believed to feel more hopeless and death anxiety due to the reduction of activity and mobility, losing friends and relatives, physical weakness and infirmity, and social isolation. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the effectiveness of teaching tolerance on the anxiety of death and life expectancy of the aged women living in Qazvin, Iran. This research was semi-experimental with the pre‐test and post‐test control group design. The statistical population included the whole 50 aged women residing in two nursing homes located in Qazvin from January 2016 to July 2016. Assigned randomly into two groups of experimental and control, the statistical sample included 30 aged women who scored higher and lower than the cut-off point in Templar’s death anxiety and snyder’s hope questionnaires, respectively. Teaching tolerance protocol was executed on the experimental group for nine sessions (two sessions a week), while the control group didn’t receive any intervention at the same time. Data analyzed through Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that teaching tolerance is effective on the reduction of death anxiety and increase of life expectancy (P<0/01). Therefore, given the special situation of elderly population residing in nursing homes and their vulnerability against life expectancy and anxiety of death, and as for the effect of teaching tolerance on aforesaid variables, tolerance based teaching seems to be crucial to utilize to decrease death anxiety and increase life expectancy in the elderly population.

The consideration of efficacious factors on resilience such as perception of God and meaning of life seems to be necessary in the elderly residing in nursing homes according to their innumerable physical and psychic stresses. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the role of perception of God and meaning of life in the resilience of the elderly residing in nursing homes. The method of this research was descriptive correlational. The statistical population included the whole 650 aged women and men residing in nursing homes located in Rasht, Iran in 2017. Selected using cluster random sampling, participants were 225 aged people. Data were collected through Lawrence’ perception of God, Steger et al.’s meaning of life and Connor and Davidson’s resilience questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple linear regression model. Results indicated that there is a significant positive relationship between perception of God and meaning of life with resilience in the elderly. Moreover, results from the stepwise multiple linear regression shows that resilience in the elderly can be predicted through meaning of life and subscales of benevolence and providence. Regarding the determinants of resilience in this research, the elderly’s resilience can be increased through reinforcing perception of God, correcting its acceptance, designing and using suitable methods inspired by logo therapy.

According to the increment of the elderly population in Iran and the vital significance of their adjustment and life expectancy, the role of diverse variables in the context appears necessary to be studied. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and health promoting life style with social adjustment and life expectancy in the elderly. The research method was descriptive-canonical correlation. The statistical population contained the whole aged individuals residing in the nursing homes located in Ahvaz, Iran among whom 140 were selected using simple random sampling. Research tools included Pittsburgh’s sleep quality, Walker’s health promotion life style, Paykel’s social adjustment, and Miller and Powers’s hope questionnaires. Being analyzed through the canonical correlation, data indicated a significant sequent with canonical coefficient of 0.689 between the set of predictor variables (sleep quality and health promoting life style) and the set of criterion variables (social adjustment and life expectancy). Besides, structural coefficients showed that health promoting life style among predictor variables and life expectancy among criterion variables seem to have the maximum share of prediction in their set. Therefore, the social adjustment and life expectancy can be enhanced through the amplification of sleep quality and health promoting life style.

Worry and anxiety about death may result in negative effects on people’s life particularly in the aged people. Therefore, specific attention to death anxiety disorder and prevention of that seem to be required. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between religious orientation and death anxiety in the elderly with the mediation role of aging perception and spiritual well-being. The study method was descriptive-structural equation modeling. The statistical population contained the whole aged individuals up to 58 years residing in Khoramabad, Iran in 2018 among whom 202 (111 male & 91 female) were selected using convenience sampling. This study adopted Allport and Ross religious orientation, Barker et al. spiritual well-being, Paloutzian & Ellison aging perception, and Templer death anxiety scales to collect data. Applied as the statistical method to analyze data using Amoos-24 and SPSS-22 software was structural equation modeling which indicated significant relationships among variables. Meanwhile, results showed that aging perception and spiritual well-being are able to operate as mediations in the relationship between religious orientation and death anxiety. Accordingly, it can be stated that religious orientation appears to be a vital factor in the reduction of death anxiety through positive aging perception and spiritual well-being. Consequently, it is suitable for mental health experts and individuals working in the elderly’s field to adopt some measures to consolidate and deepen the religious orientation in the elderly.

A mere increase in the old people’s life expectancy is thought not to be adequate, but rather the increment of longevity especially in the old people is beneficial only if dynamic elderly can be experienced. In another word, quality of life seems to be as crucial as its quantity. The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of self-compassion focused therapy on the increase of psychological well-being and reduction of depression in the elderly. This research was semi-experimental with pre‐test and post‐test control group design. The statistical population contained the whole aged individuals residing in Isfahan, Iran, in that among 100 persons residing in nursing homes and willing to take part in the study, 30 who suffered from major and moderate depression were selected and asked to fill out Yesavage et al. depression and Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being questionnaires. Self-Compassion focused therapy protocol was executed on the experimental group for eight sessions (two sessions a week), while the control group didn’t receive any psychological intervention or instruction in the same time. It was Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) through which data was analyzed using SPSS-22 software. Results indicated that self-compassion focused therapy may decrease depression and increase psychological well-being significantly (P=0.001). Suggested to implement in the aged people to decrease depression and increase psychological well-being is self-compassion focused therapy or instruction according to the value and significance of the old people in any society.
